This concise and compact dictionary, containing some 110,000 words and phrases and 130,000 translations, aims to be a “reliable and user-friendly tool for use in all language situations” (v) and to address the needs of both German and English dictionary users involved in “Studium, Beruf und Praxis” (cover text). The inside cover is put to use to illustrate the layout of the entries in the main body of the dictionary. It must be said, however, that these twelve or thirteen examples represent a carefully chosen selection, as many of the entries or translations in the main body of the dictionary are considerably shorter than those used in these illustrations. The examples taken from the English / German section show the entry followed by such features as a phonetic transcription of the word using the IPA, alternative spellings in British or American English and information on register.
