Elinor Shaffer, the Director of the Research Project ‘The Reception of British and Irish Authors in Europe’ at the University of London, can take the credit for having instigated a scholarly series, of which she is also the main editor, which is both unprecedented and by now already indispensable in reception and comparatist studies. In most cases, comparatist literary criticism directs its attention to foreign influences on authors, works and periods of a national literature or on the comparative examination of literary phenomena rooted in different, though perhaps related, geographical and social areas.
