In 1993 the seventh, final volume of the exemplary edition of the letters of D. H. Lawrence was published. The whole project had by then assembled 5.534 letters, masterminded by James T. Boulton with a team of co-editors. Professor Boulton has now produced a supplementary volume, containing not only over 120 letters that have come to light since, but also a number of important letters to Lawrence and, more than two thirds of the volume, a general index to the complete collection. This will be welcomed most gratefully by many who, like this reviewer, often had to leaf through seven indices in search of certain information; for, in spite of the magisterial three volumes of the Cambridge Biography of D. H. Lawrence, the letters will always remain the most authentic source for any biographical enquiry. The new letters – predictably not the last that will be discovered in some private collection or public library holdings –, written between 1903 and 1929, add some interesting, if unsurprising touches to the portrait of this unusually spontaneous, sincere and always interesting correspondent.
