During the last 25 years or so the situation of Auden studies has substantially improved. Mendelson’s authoritative monographs and his superb editions, the publication of Auden’s juvenilia, Fuller’s commentary and several biographies have made it possible to start out from a fairly secure basis when dealing with Auden’s oeuvre. Indeed, the availability of Auden material has created, paradoxically, another kind of scholarly problem: the need for a sifting of the huge amount of scholarship that has accumulated over the last decades.
