Park Honan’s is a careful, fresh and engaging account of the great Elizabethan infant terrible. It exudes Honan’s own deep fascination with the life, as well as his knowledge of Marlowe’s entire corpus of work; to both he brings the fruits of original research. This is an important biography, and one which will stand the test of time, but the Marlowe who is traced through this judiciously compact account is never really encouraged to leap from the pages and grab the reader. For all the occasional anecdotes, all well grounded by documentary evidence, of the danger and terror of the times, Honan has a tendency to rely a little too much on deducing the life from the works.
