Since the late 1980s masculinity studies have emerged as a new field of gender scholarship at American and English universities. Triggered by increasing symptoms of a crisis of traditional role models various methods and disciplines were enlisted to reveal the discursive mechanisms of hegemonial masculinity and develop theoretical concepts which would go beyond the binary strategy of defining a normative masculine norm in relation to dependent others. As a result of these efforts masculinity has been pluralized: Today, most representatives of this transdisciplinary and highly heterogeneous field emphasize not only the constructedness but also the diversity and complexity of male identities.
