The central tenet of this study is that no work can be properly understood unless one brings to it an understanding of its genre. Whetter accordingly sets out to define the medieval literary genre of romance in order to be able to interpret Malory’s Morte Darthur. Chapter one has the ambitious purpose of developing a universal theory of genre; chapter two crafts a definition of romance through a sustained comparison of the genre to that of epic; chapter three applies this definition to Malory’s Morte Darthur in order to demonstrate that it diverges from it, despite that work’s usual characterisation as a romance.
