Elizabeth Solopova and Stuart D. Lee: Key Concepts in Medieval Literature (Palgrave Key Concepts). Basingstoke, Hampshire: Palgrave Macmillan, 2007. Pp. 352. Paper £ 13.99.

This book joins several others in the Palgrave “Key Concepts in Literature” series which aims at providing an informative and accessible guide to various literary periods, both for the undergraduate and the general reader. Key Concepts in Medieval Literature gives an overview of the main themes, issues and critical perspectives setting medieval texts and authors in their historical, political and cultural contexts. Solopova and Lee’s approach is context-based which is justified considering the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. A clear understanding of historical and cultural contexts, i.e. the environment in which literary texts were produced, is absolutely important for the study of literature. The book under review also presents its readers with theoretical approaches and critical theory. It is divided into four parts: an initial chapter introducing major key concepts, chapters on OE and ME, and a chapter on theoretical approaches and practical issues. At the end of each subchapter there is a summary of key points, cross-referencing and suggestions for further reading indicating connections between topics and encouraging students to see their studies in a wider context and with an integrated approach.
