In the contested relationship between nature and culture food occupies a prominent status, crossing the boundaries, so to speak, making a clear distinction between the two realms obsolete. The incorporation of food reminds us of our material connection to the physical world, whereas what we eat, where and how we eat it, marks aspects of our cultural identity. Food, eating and table manners have been recognized as highly politicized, signifying dominance and subversion, alterity and the self, social stability and change, among many others. Food can serve as a form of cultural memory; in postcolonial times it also reveals cultural clashes, cultures in transition, historical developments.
