In their unattributed introduction to this collection of essays, Richard Dutton and Jean E. Howard explain that the contributors were invited ‘to write as scholars addressing fellow scholars.’ The aim of the volume is to reflect current critical debates rather than offer overviews or introductions to specific fields. The final result seems much more multi-valent than the general editors intended. ‘Who is this volume for?’ is a valid question for the reader to keep present as he or she works through each of these twenty-three articles. Another question might be why is it so expensive?
