Sonja Samberger: Artistic Outlaws. The Modernist poetics of Edith Sitwell, Amy Lowell, Gertrude Stein and H.D.
The main aim of Sonja Sambergers Artistic Outlaws is to demonstrate that Edith Sitwell and Amy Lowell, together with Gertrude Stein and H.D., fully deserve to be included in the modernist canon.(Artistic Outlaws, 35) As such, it is an ambitious project which aims to highlight the bonds between four female modernist poets, each of whom have relatively disparate agendas and styles. It also presents them as part of a movement which consciously contradicts a male dominated high modernism, as Samberger identifies it. This is achieved through analysis and comparison of their use of poetic form, their interactions with the main players of literary and artistic modernism, and their commitment to a feminine tradition of writing.
