As the editor of Deutsche Rundschau, which he founded in 1874, Julius von Rodenberg (1831–1914) was a key literary figure of post-1871 Germany. In the 1850s – and thus roughly at the same time as Theodor Fontane, whose books on Britain, including Ein Sommer in London of 1854, are much better known – Rodenberg travelled extensively in England, Wales, and Ireland, with long periods of residence in London. As a result, the strategy of authentication, or authorisation, which he employs in Tag und Nacht in London, namely, to adopt the persona of a seasoned city dweller and flâneur, is, perhaps, more plausible in his case than in those of many other Continental observers of 19th century London life.
