Women’s eating habits have long been recognized as a form of discourse, a complex metaphoric language, both of victimization as well as empowerment. Greta Olson’s published dissertation Reading Eating Disorders stands in the tradition of writings by feminists that have dealt with the female body as a contested site of institutional and personal power. Using contemporary accounts of anorexia and bulimia, Olson sets out – as the subtitle suggests – to read eating disorders as “confessions of American culture.”
