Diese Einführung, Resultat der universitären Lehrerfahrungen des Autors, sieht sich als “‘pre-theory’ book” (S. 3), das Studienanfänger nicht mit einem Durchgang durch etablierte Literaturtheorien konfrontieren, sondern bereits vorhandene studentische Fragen und Interpretationsfertigkeiten zur Systematisierung theoretischer Probleme nutzen will: “When you have worked your way through this book, you will not have had an introductory explanation of what (for example) Structuralism or Deconstruction are, but you will, I think, be better placed to understand the ideas in those approaches when you do meet them.” (S. 3)
